Summary
A powerful tale of grief, love’s enduring bonds, and secrets of the past from #1 New York Times bestselling author and master storyteller Stephen King.

Four years after the sudden death of his wife, bestselling novelist Mike Noonan is still grieving. Unable to write and plagued by vivid nightmares set at the western Maine summerhouse he calls “Sara Laughs,” Mike reluctantly returns to the lakeside getaway. There, he finds his beloved Yankee town held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, whose vindictive purpose is to take his three-year-old granddaughter, Kyra, away from her widowed young mother, Mattie. As Mike is drawn into Mattie’s and Kyra’s struggle—and as he falls in love with both of them—he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs…now the site of ghostly visitations and escalating terrors. What are the forces that have been unleashed here—and just what do they want of Mike Noonan?

What a great book! I was humming & hawing about buying this book and I’m glad I did! I most certainly take the reviews on the book to heart! The reviews influence my purchases! Half the readers love this book and half the readers don’t like this book. I’m on the side of love! I enjoyed the characters and the storyline! I even shed a tear! This book is definitely worth the read!

Cant wait for part 2 was not sure i was going to like it not your typical stephen king but book ended at a very good part and waiting for the second shipment is making me crazy -- a good different read for die hard stephen king fans.

Great book, great reading by the man Stephen King himself! Why haven't you rented this yet??

This is a long one, but I really enjoyed it....the characters were amazing. Great Stephen King, really good listen.

I cant say that I loved this book but I didnt hate it either. It was entertaining to listen to but not very scary. It's a ghost story but you really dont get many ghost moments till the very end. In fact, the book mostly focused on other story lines and plots that had very little to do with ghosts. But, it was better then the Dark tower (could not get into that one) and other newer SK books I have listened to. And as always, it was nice to hear the book read by the author and the interview afterwards was interesting.

Stephen King should NOT narrate his own books.

I absolutely loved this book. Stephen King did a wonderful job with the narrating.

This novel is my 2nd favorite book of all time right after the Stand, it does start very slow, but just like most king books if you keep reading thru the slow mundane areas ....he delivers one hell of a story... he Def makes you feel connected to not only the main characters but even the minimal ones.

Excellent read, love the way the story plays out, and how Stephen Kings gives the read the extract spice as a narrator.

I'm a huge King fan and have read most of his work and this book is easily in my top 5. It starts slow, but what great King novel doesn't, but give it a couple chapters and you'll be hooked.

Another great novel by S. King

It's great to hear King himself narrate his own books, and he always does a great job. However, I really just didn't care for this book at all. Kind of a run of the mill ghost story. Not what I expect out of King, but if you enjoy ghost stories you'll probably like this one.

Great book! Not the first time I’ve read it, but it is the first time I’ve listened to it. I liked hearing it read by the author because the story was being heard the way the author intended as opposed to someone else putting their own touch on it. He read it well.

You’ll sympathize with Mike, have a few sleepless nights, and likely learn how to pronounce that sweet Maine signal of accordance, “ayuh.”

Good story a slow start

Takes a while to warm up to the laconic reading style and long drawn out story, but it's hard to resist after that. The whole book is like the place between dreaming and waking.

I found it to be a little drawn out at times and caught my self drifting. I loved the plot and how he brings his surroundings to life.

SK narration was great and I now wish that more of his audio books were narrated by him. Story ending was good, the journey was great.

Great listen, I have been listening to audio books for years. This one tops the cake. Thanks Stephen King for Bag of Bones and the narration as well.

I listened for an hour and waiting for it to get interesting... it never happened. I had no issue with the narration, I have heard some horrible narration before, and this does not fall under that umbrella. This book was incredibly disappointing, I hope the movie is better.

I truly had to stop listening--Stephen King should not read his books--I tried to listen to it but found myself repeating the recording over and over after listening for a very short time. His voice just doesn't cut it . I will have to read the novel. I hope someone else will read this book so that I can listen to it on tape. I do a lot of commuting. . .

I agree with Mickey Way in that Stephen King should leave the narrating to the pros. The story is good but King is unable to distinguish the characters with his voice. At times it makes following the story line difficult.

Before you read this review let me say first to the reader don't judge me from my grammar and spelling mistakes. I have trouble expressing myself when I try to go from my head to the page. It's why I think I enjoy audio books. I've read this book 3 times! The last time I stopped just before King turned the screws. I figured that as long as I didn't read the next chapter all the characters would still be ok. That's what King does to me; Mike is so well developed in the first 2 ACTs that by the time ACT3 rolled around I knew what he would do when, I don't want to give away the ending of the book. This and Duma Key are his best efforts. I only wish he could go back and recreate Ben Mears and Susan Norton. I think if he did Salem's Lot wouldn't be just "good trash".

This is my 30th book in 2008 and I ended up on a good one. This was also my first Stephen King novel. I had heard mixed reactions about King but thought I would give him a try ... and I am glad that I did. Out of the 30 books that I have listened to this year, I have only given five books a rating of "5 stars" ... this one is one of them. Mr. King is quite a talented story teller with exquisite but easy to listen to prose. In that he narrated this one himself, it was even more of a treat to listen to.

There are songwriters that can't sing, and there are singers that can't write songs. Stephen King can write good stories, but should leave the narration to other skilled performers. I disliked his narration so much, I didn't even finish the first disc and sent it back the next day.

Profile Avatar
Ann Kelley

Currently on disc 9, it's a very enjoyable listen. The most frustrating part is that there are only a couple tracks per disc and when you take it from car to house, it takes some time getting set to where you left off.

I loved it! This book let you set in and get comfortable with the main character before bringing on the ghosts and it was like a mystery. He kept all the details until the end (I could have done w/o the "graphicness" but that would have taken away from the mood). I hope that things work out and I wonder about the future. Very good book. Really "couldn't put it down." The interview at the end was insightful and charming also.

I enjoyed this book, but found that I may not be a huge fan of Stephen King after all. The story trailed off in places, but everything comes together at the end. It's always nice to hear how a book should be read, how the author intended it, as Mr. King did in this one.

I am accurately described as on of Stephen King's "Constant Readers". If you even know what that means, you know ehy I feel I am aptly qualified to say that Bag of Bones is one of King's finest stories and is actually very scary. I had chills running down my spine during a number of the book's passages. I have listened to only disc 1-10 and I can't wait to hear the last set!

I hated Stephen King --mostly through ignorance, jealousy, and his work being everywhere ('too popular, must be crap!')-- then I listened to his Audio CD "On Writing" (could have gotten to his process faster) but I admired his honesty and how well he spun a good yarn (even his life story). Then I listened to "THE CELL" (read brilliantly by Campbell Scott -- side note: would be great to search Simply Audio by 'Read By', that way I could find other books read by Campbell Scott). The Cell was a taught, well-written horror, much in the spirit (I imagine, having only watched the TV series) of THE STAND. I've read only the first ten CDs but he is patient and has woven a believable story that approaches autobiography (but not me-me-me). It is the story of a "top 15" author --having suffered the loss of his lover/wife/muse-- and seeks out their cottage for rest while he wrestles with writer's block -- only to stumble on a mother in need and ghosts a plenty!

Like most of his books, a great story and interesting characters. The dream sequences were a little long and hard to follow, but all in all, a great story.

A little slow at times but a great story and as usual, great character development. And interesting because there's a lot of Stephen himself in Mike Noonan.

This was my first Steven King novel. I typically do not enjoy these suspense novels, but what a captivating and engrossing story. With Steven King reading it himself, it added even more depth to all askects of the story.

This was my first Stephen King novel -- like some of the reviewers mentioned, it takes a little while to get into it but it is well worth the wait! He is simply laying the groundwork for what occurs later in the story. In addition, Mr. King is interviewed at the end of the book, so don't eject the CD too fast! Brilliant book...

This book shocked me. As I listened to the first few CD's I wondered how he was going to get 20 hours out of this boring book. But, I had read a previous review and they said that it gets better. Boy, were they right. Listen to this one and realize that the boring part is laying groundwork for the really good part. Enjoy.

Wow! What a master Steven King is. The best surprise was to hear the author read his own work. Nothing is better than hearing a true New England accent. Plus the music chosen was exceptional. I listened while driving my 90 minute commute in full daylight and was still scared by his work. Rent it now, you won't regret it.

I was a huge fan of Stephen King as a teenager, but grew tired of his stuff that came out for most of the 90's (I thought it was mostly repetitive). This, however, has redeemed King in my eyes: excellent story, engaging characters and a captivating reading by the author (a big plus for me). If you're looking to get re-introduced to King's writing, or are just looking for a well-written and exciting story, definitely get this selection.

Great, great story and wonderfully read by Stephen King himself. However, it is very annoying to have to wait a week or more to receive the next set of tapes. It's much better to be able to listen to the story continuously without such long interruptions.

King delivers! The "Master of Horror" once again shows he deserves the titile in this thrilling and seriously spooky novel. The author's brilliant narration adds to the effect. His descriptive style brings the words to life so well you can see the the images in your mind as clearly as if it were a movie. The story builds to an unforgettable climax that is a scary as anything I've ever seen or read. I have not been able to get it out of my mind. Don't miss this one!

This selection helped me to rediscover what I love so much about Stephen's writing - a wonderfully crafted, descriptive and easy to follow story. King is a master story-teller and his characters come to life. His own narration brings an added element of depth and warmth to this story. Its a tale seeped with quirky townfolk, dark secrets, ghosts and legends amid the landscape of typical small Maine lake town. Its also an endearing love story, something I was pleasantly surprised to find numbered among King's many talents.

This book was simply great to listen to-especially since it was read by the "Master of Horror" himself, Stephen King. Not only is the story one of his best but it was a real treat to have Mr. King do the entire 20-disc, unabridged recording. This was one of my favorite books to read and definitely in the top 2 or 3 books I've listened to on CD from SimplyAudioBooks! I'm sorry that it ended! PS-check out the interview at the end with SK about his love of audiobooks!!

Stephen King is the master of storytelling! Hearing him narrate his own books as well is an added treat! It is better than watching a movie because your mind gets to create the picture with King's instruction! Bag of Bones 1-5 is the beginning of a thrilling novel, full of head scratching mystery and goose bump, hair standing chills! I could hardly wait for the next set of CD's to come!

I have to say, I was skeptical about 'listening' to this book at first. But once I got past that, and started to get into it, King completely captivated me. The fact that he read the novel himself made it even more special, and captivating. This was an intense book, it kept me wanting more, and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this book to any King fan - it was amazing!
