Summary
Doris Kearns Goodwin’s classic life of Lyndon Johnson, who presided over the Great Society, the Vietnam War, and other defining moments the tumultuous 1960s, is a monument in political biography. From the moment the author, then a young woman from Harvard, first encountered President Johnson at a White House dance in the spring of 1967, she became fascinated by the man—his character, his enormous energy and drive, and his manner of wielding these gifts in an endless pursuit of power. As a member of his White House staff, she soon became his personal confidante, and in the years before his death he revealed himself to her as he did to no other.

Widely praised and enormously popular, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream is a work of biography like few others. With uncanny insight and a richly engrossing style, the author renders LBJ in all his vibrant, conflicted humanity.

the book was great. very well written and for a presidential biography and history of that time i found fascinating. my formative years were during president johnson and vietnam war. yet i knew little about his “ great society” and how he got through congress so many social programs we take for granted and enjoy today! he was also an interesting man. a big personality yet with insecurities about how people would remember him especially because he hated the war but was so conflicted by his advisors . she gave a picture of the man which was fascinating. as well as his presidency and what he accomplished and what he wished he had done but couldn’t because of the war. unfortunately my review isn’t very good because i couldn’t finish the book. i skipped through some. that is because the female narrator was terrible! to me! she did most of the book. she had annoying habit of lowering her voice in this menacing tone in the beginning of her sentences for no rhyme or reason! and she would read fast without inflection or pauses for commas, on long and dense sentences with lots to absorb. it was just annoying as if she wasn’t paying attention to the content or meaning of the sentences. i want to buy the book and read it because i disliked the female narrator. but the book was very well written. i believe the author won book awards for this biography and went on to write two more presidential biography’s. she’s a very talented story teller. ! and analyzed historical content which made reading it fun. i feel this president was so misunderstood. she brought him alive and made him real.
