NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES, OPRAH DAILY, GOODREADS, KIRKUS REVIEWS, AND MORE

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“I can’t imagine any woman reading this without feeling seen, inspired, and totally empowered.” —Mel Robbins, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“A MASTERPIECE, you guys. This memoir by the great Jen Hatmaker *cannot* be missed. I was riveted as if to a thriller and touched/moved/inspired in ways I can’t quite articulate yet. Just please read. You’ll thank me.” —Elin Hilderbrand

From Jen Hatmaker—beloved New York Times bestselling author and host of the For the Love podcast—a brutally honest, funny, and revealing memoir about the traumatic end of her twenty-six-year-long marriage, and the beginning of a different kind of love story.

At 2:30 a.m. on July 11, 2020, Jen Hatmaker woke up to her husband of twenty-six years whispering into his phone to another woman from their bed. It was the end of life as she knew it. In the months that followed, she went from being a shiny, funny, popular leader to a divorced wreck on antidepressants and antianxiety meds, parenting five kids alone with no clue about the functioning of her own bank accounts. Having led millions of women for over a decade—urging them to embrace authenticity, find radical agency, and create healthy relationship—she felt like a catastrophic failure.

In Awake, Jen shares for the first time what happened when she found herself completely lost at sea—and how she made it to shore. In candid, surprisingly funny vignettes spanning forty years of girlhood, marriage, and parenting, Jen lays bare the disorienting upheaval of midlife—the implosion of a marriage, the unraveling of religious and cultural systems, and the grief that accompanies change you didn’t ask for. And, drawing on all resources—from without and within—Jen dares to question the systems beneath the whole house of cards, and to reckon with the myths, half-truths, and lies that brought her to this point.

More than one woman’s story, Awake is a critical analysis of the story given to all of us: the story of gender limitations, religious subservience, body shame, self-erasure. With refreshing candor, Jen explores a midlife renaissance—grieving what’s lost, cherishing possibility, and entering the second half of life wide awake.

I appreciate that it is self narrated by the author - her personality and style show through and so many "extras". I have recommended my friends both read it and listen. This journey resonates with many who grew up through the church during that period. This caused me to pause and reflect and I appreciate that, while hurt in this life change, she does not push blame. Rather she is reflective and intentional in healing and forward movement in her relationship with God and people. Well written, very different from her other books. I so appreciate the tone and style. Highly recommend!

Absolutely wonderful!!! After losing my 3 month old to SIDS, my abusive husband, whom was cheating on me since day one and having another woman pregnant at the same time I was and that hospital I worked at for 19 years shut down. I lost it… I faked it way too much. This audio book was so amazing and although I’ve been on the same road for the past 7 years I can so relate and it’s nice to recollect!! Thank you Jen!!!

I never give memoirs less than 5 stars (because how can I review someone’s heart on paper) but this one, I wish I could give it more. Jen Hatmaker has shown the world, once again, how messy and lovely life can be, and doesn’t shy away from the parts that make her look less than perfect. A true inspiration.

Said many words for women out loud who were infiltrated to the culture at the time. Author as the reader was great and felt like a conversation with a new friend. Go girls!

This is a great book if you are going through a divorce.

It’s unfortunate she’s been hurt by her husband which is super sad. Although, it’s not thee focus of her book. She’s clearly an angry, misled, confused about life, focused on self, hater of the United States, a denier of the truths of the Bible and completely wrong about the majority of the melting pot of humans who are actual true Christ followers. Jesus is real, the Bible is truth, there are right and wrongs and he is the way the truth and the life. Not “me.”

Great story, lots to get out of it even if you're not recovering from a religious upbringing. Took a minute to get used to her narration style, but I think it upped the humor that she read it herself.

you MUST listen to her audio because every bit of her personality is in it! The only terrible thing about the book is that it ended. Well done Jen!!!

A biographical masterpiece. Literally life changing for anyone brave enough to follow in the path Jen has trusted herself to be carried through. I am sure I will listen and read again - it’s really that good.
